The sunset at summer solstice seen thru 'the gate of the sun'
Wise people are still discussing whether Ales stenar, an ship barrow in souther Sweden, is a graveyard, a sacred place or an sun and moon observatory. But as the construction is based on the suns position on the horizon at the winter solstice sunrise and the summer solstice sunset and no grave has been found it seems reasonable to assume it was used for observations and ceremonies. The 2 larger stones in the stem and stern of the 'ship' are probably transported by sea from Brantevik near Kivik, and are the only 2 processed stones in the ship barrow, that otherwise is made up of natural stones. These 2 stones make up 'the gate of the sun' thru which the summer solstice sunset and the winter solstice sunrise can be observed.
